Dial 911… it’s PMS

Let me start by saying this, most men have no clue of what PMS really is. We often hear the word and pretend to know all about it, but the there is nothing quite like it in a man’s lifetime.

So how do men deal with it? How do we handle the hormone outbursts which translate in those rather unpleasant mood swings? Well, I read that the exact causes of PMS are still not fully understood. However the symptoms are clear, tension, irritability, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue… the list goes on and on. Apparently there are over 200 symptoms in total which have been associated to PMS. Personally that tells me it’s a no win situation.

Certainly it is no walk in the park, and I assure you some men must dread that time of month possibly more than their woman. It could also be a relief if you’ve been having unprotected sex of course, but it comes with a price. With many women PMS is not about being extra sensitive, it’s more along the lines of IMPOSSIBLE. So anyway, most men have come up with an antidote or rather a defense mode. A very simple method really, you just have to respond positively when necessary.

It is like that SLEEP mode on your computer, which takes up very little power and it is not quite processing anything.

  1. Hahaha Best thing to do, "respond positively."

I like curling up quietly, and just being held.

  4. I don't quite understand what sex,protected or unprotected has to do with PMS.Though it does help with the stress part of it.I would be happy with a massage,ice cream and ALOT of Midol!!! A hot guy wouldn't hurt either=}

  6. I don't mean to lecture here, but PMS is normally an indication that the girl is not pregnant. Sorry that was so blunt!

  7. Love Ben and Jerry's, especially Chubby Hubby.

And a cute guy would definitely be nice :) Being single is not fun

  8. Not all women suffer from PMS. Unfortunately, you only hear about the ones who do. My ex used to blame everything a woman did on "PMS". LOL! His wife didn't have a problem with it, but that was the going joke at the time. But PMS is no joke to those who go through it.

PMS is a chemical situation, and the chemicals involved are many and varied. It is mainly misunderstood because men are the ones trying to figure it out. It's sorta like a guy talking about labor pains. If he can't understand what he's talking about what's the big deal? However, if you tell him it's sorta like getting kicked in the crotch thirty times in a row, he winces and instantly understands.

Women figure out what they need if they suffer from PMS, and for every woman it varies. Some feel relief by eating dark chocolate. Some get some relief by taking a bath and rubbing rosewater with a few drops of Helichrysum essential oil on their body. Some take evening primrose oil capsules. Others go the Dong Quai Chinese herbal route. Many women feel relief when their significant other gives them a massage with the primrose oil mixed with sweet almond oil.

But never joke about PMS...because it's no joke.

  9. I didn't know about dark chocolate! Thank you for advice! But it's true that there is no symptoms to be sure what it exactly is. And I can only feel sorry for men. Some of them leave their homes while the PMS is completed! And you are right Fran, it's no joke!

  11. I feel more sorry for my kids than my husband, actually. lol They have no idea WHY mommy is such a bitch. But Daddy knows and he takes care of me (usually). He has sisters. I always said I would NEVER marry a guy who didn't have sisters. And I didn't. Either time. :->

  12. BTW....touche' on the crotch-kicking comment. Although, getting kicked in the crotch as a female isn't exactly pleasurable either.

I don't know. It's strange how men paint women as helpless victims of a perfectly natural bodily function. It's almost like using a defining piece of the female experience as a reason for our silly foibles.

Periods aren't impossible, and they don't make us so. It doesn't rob us of our reason or ability. Maybe I've been reading too much Jezebel lately.

That being said...if I'm craving Twizzlers and/or Ruffles, Auntie Flo is about to come for a visit :P

  14. I just read an article saying women should "embrace" the cleansing and feelings our time of the month brings....WTF?! I'd like to "embrace" the person who wrote that article! PMS and Pre-Menopause are a dangerous combination! However, men can suck it up for a few days.....we have to suck it up during football season....

  15. I think the safest thing a significant other can do is be supportive. Especially caring and understanding, defined by having her favorite treat handy, and quickly available.

  16. I think PMS is different for every woman. Some experience it, some don't. Some women experience PMS differently every month. I can say that I was pretty lucky. I didn't have any special cravings or anything during that time.
But I could count on being a little moody. As I got older, I got more symptoms. I do agree though with the comment that most doctors are men trying to figure out how the female body works. And what they don't understand tends to get labled "what's the big deal?".
The best thing a man can do is just be understanding and supportive through those times.
